Cars and trucks, at the shop in Scottsville

Automotive work is done at the shop: tires, Road Force balancing, front-end alignment, steering and suspension, struts, tie rods, brakes and oil changes for cars, pickups and SUVs.

Tires and what holds them to the road

Most of what brings a car or truck in starts with the tires and what holds them on the road: a worn set, a shake at highway speed, a pull to one side, a clunk over bumps, or brakes that squeal.

The shop does not take on engine or transmission work. If it is under the car and it touches the tires, steering or brakes, call and describe it.

Car and truck services

  • Car and Truck Tires

Tires for cars, pickups and SUVs are mounted and balanced at the shop in Scottsville. Call with the size off the sidewall and any brand you have in mind, and Dustin will tell you what he can get.

  • Road Force Balancing and Tire Diagnostics

At Powell Ag Tire, computer tire diagnostics and Road Force balancing are one machine and one process. The shop's Hunter Road Force balancer balances the wheel and tire and, in the same pass, checks whether a vibration comes from something weights cannot fix.

  • Front-End Alignment

A front-end alignment sets the angles of the wheels so the car or truck tracks straight and the tires wear evenly. Powell Ag Tire does front-end alignments on cars, pickups and SUVs at the shop in Scottsville.

  • Steering, Suspension, Struts and Tie Rods

Powell Ag Tire works on the parts that hold the wheels to the road and point them where you steer: steering, suspension, struts and tie rods, at the shop in Scottsville.

  • Brakes

Powell Ag Tire does brake work on cars, pickups and SUVs at the shop in Scottsville. If the brakes squeal, grind, pulse or feel soft, call and describe what you hear and feel.

  • Oil Changes

Powell Ag Tire does oil changes on cars, pickups and SUVs at the shop in Scottsville. Call with the year, make and model.

What is behind a shake, a pull or a bounce

Drawing of a wheel on a Road Force balancer: a loaded roller presses against the spinning tire, and a stiff spot on the tread is marked where it meets the road

A shake at highway speed

A standard balance spins the wheel and corrects weight. Road Force balancing also presses a roller against the tire, like the road does, to find stiff spots that shake the steering even with the weights right.

A pull, or a crooked wheel

  • It drifts or pulls on a straight, level road.
  • The steering wheel sits crooked going straight.
  • One edge of a tire wears faster than the rest.
Drawing of a strut: a coil spring around a damper, with an oil leak running down the damper body and an arrow showing the body bouncing

A bounce, a clunk, a lean

  • It keeps bouncing after a bump.
  • The nose dives under braking, or the body leans hard in turns.
  • Clunks over rough roads, or loose, wandering steering.

How a shop visit works

Shop visit

Scottsville
  1. Call first

With the year, make and model, or the tire size, and what you are noticing.

  2. Bring it in

When you settle on a time over the phone. Mention any noise, pull or shake.

  3. Hear what was found

You hear what was found before the work begins, and decide what gets done.

  4. Drive it home

If something still feels off on your usual roads, call and say so.

Where to find your tire size

It is molded into the sidewall. Read it out when you call, and mention any brand you have in mind.

Questions people ask

Do you do engine or transmission work?

No. The shop works on tires, brakes, alignment, steering, suspension, struts and tie rods, and does oil changes. Engine and transmission work is not something it takes on.

Are Road Force balancing and computer tire diagnostics the same thing?

At this shop they are one machine and one process. The Hunter Road Force balancer measures the wheel and the tire, loads the tire with a roller the way the road does, and shows whether a vibration can be corrected by turning the tire on the wheel. With the roller off, it works as a standard balancer.

What should I have ready when I call?

The tire size off the sidewall and any brand you have in mind. For a farm call, where the machine is. For a car or truck, the year, make and model.

Can I text or email instead of calling?

No. Powell Ag Tire takes calls only, at (270) 622-4171. It is a landline with an answering machine, so if Dustin is out on a farm call, leave a message or call back.
