Steering, suspension, struts and tie rods

Powell Ag Tire works on the parts that hold the wheels to the road and point them where you steer: steering, suspension, struts and tie rods, at the shop in Scottsville.

When struts or steering need a look

  • It keeps bouncing after a bump.
  • The nose dives under braking, or the body leans hard in turns.
  • Clunks or knocks over rough roads.
  • Loose, wandering steering, or play in the wheel.
  • Oily residue running down a strut body.

Struts

A strut is the spring and shock absorber in one, holding the corner of the car up and keeping the tire pressed to the road. A worn strut lets the car bounce and dip, and can leave cupped wear on the tire.

Tie rods

Tie rods connect the steering to the wheels. When their ends wear, the steering gets loose, the car wanders, and the tires can wear on the edges. Worn tie rod ends are a common reason for a steering wheel with play in it.

An alignment usually follows

Replacing tie rods or struts changes the wheel angles, so an alignment is normally part of the job.
